A collection of miscelaneous freight cars including scrap gons, standard gondolas, cabooses, autoracks and centerbeam lumber cars.

Many of the older Thrall coal gondolas have found further use in hauling scrap.

A collection of images of covered hoppers in freight service in the USA. A wide range of commodities are transported in these cars including corn, wheat, cement and gypsum. Builders include Trinity, Thrall, ARI (ACF) and National Steel.

Most are from a visit to North Carolina in October 2009. Places included Hamlet Yard, Charlotte, Atlanta and Durham.

Commodities include vegetable oils, carbon dioxide, hydrochloric acid and other noxious sounding chemicals with long names.

NS has a big presence in Charlotte with a freight switching yard and Intermodal facility. I also made visits to Durham, Greensboro and the Salisbury area. I did start and finish in Atlanta, GA and there are some pix from there!

GEs dominate the freight trains however the smaller EMD GP38-2s tend to switch yards and work locals. Some of the older Conrail blue units still show up from time to time. Runthrough power also appears on certain trains. Check out the link to the Norfolk Southern loco roster which gives an up to date fleet status.

A collection of images of CSX activity in and around Charlotte, North Carolina during October 2009.

The big freight yard is Hamlet which is about a 2 hour drive along Highway 74 from Charlotte. The action is 24 hour and the yard is only legitimately accessible at the west and east end.

There is another smaller CSX yard in North West Charlotte called Pinoca Yard. There is also an intermodal terminal there.

Trains are dominated by GEs but some of the older EMDs like the venerable SD40-2 hang on. Some of the SD50s are still knocking about and have been reincarnated as SD50-2's.

There is a useful website called "CSX Bull Sheet" which gives useful information about CSX in the area.

Some images of those famous Guilford locos from 2 decades ago. Inherited from the Maine Central, Delaware & Hudson and Boston & Maine.
They are all Kodachrome slides (mostly 64 and a couple of 200) scanned at 2900dpi using a Coolscan IV ED unit. Saved as a NEF-RAW then touched up in CS4.

The Milwaukee Road had just become a 'Fallen Flag'. The Soo Line had taken over the railroad recently and was storing some of the lower powered GPs.
The Milwaukee Road was famous for operating the unique SDL39 - a lightweight C truck locomotive designed to run on branch lines with light weight rail. Only 10 were built and had export trucks fitted. They are now all retired. Just added are some more MILW and C&NW photos.
I was on a two month trip across the USA after finishing uni. I dropped in to see a college aquaintance in St Paul and he took me down to Hoffman Avenue where I took these.

This is a collection of small watermarked images (1024 x 681). This collection covers some of the trains I saw while visiting Disney, Florida for a couple of weeks in December 2005. I must say that some state and railroads officials were a bit edgey about what I was doing with such a large camera!
The photos were taken in Orlando (mainly at Taft Yard) and Winter Haven where Minute Maid has an OJ plant. The elderly GE B30-7 and B36-7 locos were still operating but were on borrowed time. Ex B&O GP40-2s and ex D&H GP39-2s also showed up on freight and switcher duties. Amtral P42dc locos and BNSF GE and EMD units also showed up.

Disney World's 4 parks give you plenty to do and eat. The Kennedy Space Center, Bok Tower Gardens and the Tampa Aquarium are also well worth a visit.

Railroad action from CSX, NS and AMTRAK in and around Pittsburgh during August 2001. Most notably CSX's yard at New Castle and on the exConrail (PRR) line through Pittsburgh itself.
If you Google Earth Pittsburgh and look for Martin LutherKing Junior Busway, Bigelow Boulevard and Herron Way crosses the busway and NS mainline and it joins Liberty Avenue. The CSX/B&O line crosses the Allegheney River on a very impressive steel bridge.
The traffic is steady. Most traffic heads down the Ohio/Monongahela line southwest of here.
GEs seem to dominate the freights and hi-nose EMDs also show up.
